Someone (I guess on this list) wrote me privately, (but apparently not this list as I can't find it in my archive), that Microsoft used a fair bit of [comms ?] from BSD in their XP kernel, so Microsoft might have a vested interest in seeing BSD (but not Linux) funded, though of course they wont realise or pay anything unless it's presented to them the right way. I can't tell you more 'cos I've lost my copy of that mail, but if the person who mailed me privately before could repost this list ? ...
