It has another positive effect: It makes the writer read (or at
least scan) the previous content of the discussion prior to writing
his own text. Additionally, a discussion thread can be separated,
so it's not simply "one paragraph below the whole text", but instead
answers or comments to portions of the quoted text. Starting this
work at the beginning of the text seems to be easier than at the
bottom.
