Subject: unix.stp errors while installing Oracle on FreeBSD

I have been encountering a number of errors while trying to install
Oracle 8 on FreeBSD 3.2-STABLE. I have followed instructions from both
http://www.lf.net/lf/pi/oracle/install-linux-oracle-on-freebsd and
http://www.scc.nl/~marcel/howto-oracle.html. The errors that I am
getting have to do with the unix.stp file in ~/unpackdir/orainst/. The
most common error are ones which say (for example):

An operating system error occurred while trying to spawn 'touch
/etc/oratab' while redirecting output to ''. (No such file or
    directory.)

The problem lies not with the touching of the file, but with the
"redirecting output to..." And no, you cannot perform the Oracle
installation as root.

I've gotten past it on one occasion by editing the unix.stp file, but I
am guessing that there is something simple that is wrong with the way I
am trying to install.

Here's the lowdown:

oracle user: oracle
oracle grp: dba

unpackdir: /home/oracle/oracle

I am running orainst while logged in as user oracle. All files in the
unpackdir are chowned oracle:dba

All kernel mods have been made and linux emulation is running.

Any suggestions or help would be mucho appreciated...the longevity of
running only FreeBSD machines at the company depends on getting Oracle
installed.

TIA,

Nathan
