That worked like a champ, thanks.  I'm still a bit curious about why the
same set of commands work on an i386 server of a version contemporary with
my alpha server.  Although I haven't dug too deeply into the matter, a quick
peek at the source for ifconfig and gifconfig shows that neither have been
updated since August 30.

I appreciate the info.  I'll submit a patch to the net/freenet6 port later
today.
