Then the machine/syscons isn't dead, its hanging probably in the
switch function, Try logging in from another machine/tty and
see what a ps -l can tell about that...

Hmm, I'm running with a S3 card too, current system though, and I cannot
reproduce this.
What machinery are you using ??, maybe I can find a semilar setup here
to test it on....
