is there a way to make icedtea work with linux-sun version instead of opennjdk?

I didn't want to change to the linux version and lose the browser plugin.

No. IcedTea-Web is only to complement OpenJDK. Oracle JDK/JRE
bundles a proprietary browser plugin.

You just need to configure your browser to execute *.jnlp with Linux's
one. Java Web Start is not directly related to a browser plugin.
