Hello, I'm running FreeBSD on laptops since 2.2.5 in the 90 of last century and every laptop is a new challenge in some areas, esp. X11 and nowadays the Wifi chips; but for developers (like you) it was always somehow solveable, for example using NDIS if the Wifi is not supported; having said this, the best option is to find a reseller who lets you boot the laptop with some FreeBSD or Linux live-CD to check what chips are detected; or to buy something which fits your needs concerning memory, disk and screen size, and see how to solve the problems.
