What I found worked for me was this :

mv /usr/lib/*so* to /usr/lib/compat
then ldconfig /usr/lib /usr/local/lib /usr/X11R6/lib, etc, etc
then cd /usr/src
then make world
then rm /usr/lib/compat
then make world again
then rebuild a kernel
then reboot
then rebuild XFree (specifically xterm and xdm)

and hey presto : it worked :-)
