No, 1) there is no "file" package (at least not in Debian, I checked)
2) the "fileutils" package, which I did find, didn't have file.
I don't think I need it anymore, but since I got this same advice now
from two places, it seems the old adage holds: the only folks who will
give you directions are those who don't know where it is.
