I don't believe that's the case anymore. Again, I have almost perfectly functional 3.3-RELEASE machines using ports, simply by changing /var/db/port.mkversion. I don't get origin support in the pkg tools, but that's the only difference I see. Theoretically the mtree files may be an issue, but again, I haven't noticed.
