 Well - I hate to see someone having such trouble and "punting" back to 
Linux.

 But; just to encourage you to keep trying - I'm sure we can figure this
out.

 You mentioned that you tried to run it overnight, using the FTP
install straight from freebsd.org - was that with 2.1.5 or 2.1.6?
It might be worth trying just one more time with 2.1.6.
