The problem went away after setting

hint.apic.0.disabled="1"
into /boot/loader.conf

so now my laptop use atpic instead of ioapic for interrupt handling.

I'm not sure at this time if ioapic worked under FreeBSD 5.4.  I have to
reinstall in order to check.
