Any chance the CPU load actually drops when you are doing something? I remember some issues a while back with FreeBSD in VMware consuming 100% CPU when idle. Possible this could be related. The other thought would be screen savers, if you are running one in the VM, the VM has to use CPU to process the graphics, and that could be cause.
