the stuff you'll need is there:
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.4-RELEASE/

make sure u don't download the directory called packages. also you can
skip games if you want...

alternatively, a good  solution imho is to get an iso image and burn
a CD with it. in this case, if all goes wrong etc and you want to
reformat and start again you'll always have that cd, which will
have much more things appart from the basic system.

maybe the best solution, i know now i should have done that, is
to by a book on freebsd that has cds with it as well. in this
way you get the book, which will prove very usefull, and the
cds.

if you follow the book option, make sure is a recent one so that
the cd will not be outdated...
