PATA DVD-R optical drive (NEC ND-2500A) is not detected by the ata(4) driver, even though the ata controller appears to be recognized by FreeBSD. Can be reproduced with GENERIC and custom kernels (w/ "device atapicd" included), i386 and amd64 editions. Drive is detected fine using same GENERIC kernel running on an Nv nForce4 platform.
