I was seeing this as well (causing installworld and make release to
fail), but since it didn't seem universal, I did some digging.

This problem appears to only occur if you set CPUTYPE=p3.  Setting
CPUTYPE seems to trigger some bug in the compiler/libraries that sh
uses (recompiling sh itself doesn't seem to change things).

I'm assuming that setting CPUTYPE is still officially unsupported
and/or frowned upon, but if someone would like me to file a PR, I'd be
happy to.
