The extra sanity check seems to add very little overhead:

if (echo "$$4" | grep "^\..*" > /dev/null) \
	|| (echo "$$4" | grep [^[:alnum:]_.-]>  /dev/null); then \
                 echo "blah blah"; \
fi

And "." are very common in filenames.
