This sounds as though you are missing at least one Makefile or one bsd.*.mk file. In addition, these days most people should not need to rebuild the INDEX file itself. 'cd /usr/ports && make fetchindex' should be sufficient for most people who are not using customized build options, e.g. in /etc/make.conf. mcl
