Many simple (but useful!) features have been removed during the step from XFCE (version 3, Gtk 1 based) to Xfce (version 4, Gtk 2 based, note the change in capitalization). The "desktop features" got more attention, making Xfce much more than the XFCE "CDE lookalike", so it could become a real desktop environment with all bells & whitles, but the price was - it became more complex, with all implications. Many things went "auto" and didn't really work as expected on FreeBSD. Xfce, like all other desktop environments, are targeting Linux primarily, and their ports to FreeBSD are often not 100 % "the same" when it comes to the supported features.
