The upgrade to 4.0 should have updated all the files 34upgrade has
touched.

I haven't been following your problem so I cant say what has been going
wrong but a general hint is to cvsup again, either just ports or
everything, depending on how old your -STABLE is, and try again (building
world first if neccessary).
