I think this is an issue for the main alpha users to decide, but I would note that there are two ways to think of it. One is *whether* alpha time_t should be 64-bit, and the second is *when* it should go to 64-bit. I think all the new platforms (sparc64 and ia-64, at least) should be 64-bit time_t's for 5.0-release. For alpha users, it might be less painful if alpha remained 32-bit for 5.0-release, and then consider making time_t 64-bit for 6.0-release.
