If you use the ppp -auto -alias (isp) option you can setup dialup on demand in this scenario. Or just the -alias will work. You can setup your two machines with dummy ip address such as 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 and set the x86 box up as a gateway. This option is under /etc/rc.conf gateway_enable="YES" Also you will need to put the ip address of the x86 machine as the default router on the alpha box. Then just connect up. I have this kind of setup at home but I prefer to use a small hub rather than a crossover cable incase I need to connect more machines.
