Thanks!  After digging in a bit more, I found that the NetBSD port was
designed for use with ugen - that's why the ioctls wouldn't work.  The
NetBSD port worked fine after removing the ufm driver.

Warner's little program works fine also, after compiling in the ufm
device driver.
