Win95 came a little later. :) Yes, true, it runs (almost) like hell on a 486dx. Unfortunately, my notebook is an sx33. - Do you imagine how long it takes for the sx to emulate a math co-pro when you need to keep several real large matrices in memory ? Hours and hours ! So, I'm more relaxed when my stuff requires just about one hundredth of the notebook's calculation period on the p 400. Besides, I also tried SUSE's pre-current version of the f2c and g77 some weeks ago - they even finished within just two thirds of the time the old f32/ go32 version needs (on the p400). Well, ehm, my other fortran has MS's copyright from 1982, 83, 84, the linker (v.241) from 1983, suffering from the 64KB boundary ... Finally, concerning the last part of your friendly replies - I've tested the combinations of 'my' f32/ go32 and DOS 6.2 with win95 or win98 or winNT. Booted to DOS, I get systems crashs although I exclude the corresponding areas in the config.sys. But, basically, it's no problem - I look forward to the installation of BSD.
