I missed the earlier discussion, but here's a WAG. If you _don't_ use the -c option when you boot and disable unnecessary drivers, you are likely to see just this symptom because of a conflict with the bus mouse drivers. I've had this happen a few times. The solution for me was to disable everything in input _except_ the syscons driver. (You don't need a mouse for installation anyway.)
