The FreeBSD console uses so= ftware rendering and is thus perfectly capable of displaying Unicode. And in fact= , it does so just fine. However, as your code produces an ISO-8859-1 encoded = =C3=B6 instead of the expected UTF-8 encoded =C3=B6, it is not displayed.
