To be honest, in my experience, FBSD hardly ever touches swap, and that is a Good Thing(tm). The "double the size of RAM" is really a Linux rule of thumb, and trust me, Linux uses swap all the time. In all honesty, if you're going to be using more than a few Mb of swap, you really should consider getting more memory, especially with the prices as they are at the moment.
