Thanks to whoever sent me a note that editors/nano is broken on
-CURRENT.  (I don't recall who did and apparently I have deleted
the message.)

If nano happens to run for somebody on -STABLE, you should be able
to make it blow up there as well by setting /etc/malloc.conf -> JR.
I have narrowed down the bug and sent a report to the nano developers.
