Typically, the numbers in (), like ls(1) and wait(2), are numbers that refer to man page categories. There is a place on the internet you can see what all the categories are...I was looking at it the other day but cannot remember where it was. If you search for "write man page" or something along those lines, I'm sure you will find it. --Brian -----Original Message----- From: owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG [mailto:owner-freebsd-newbies@FreeBSD.ORG] On Behalf Of David Chavarria Sent: Tuesday, March 11, 2003 12:29 PM To: FreeBSD List Subject: Handbook ? I've been reading the handbook, and installed FreeBSD 4.7 successfully. Now I'm trying to understand the file system structure. On page 101 for example, it shows the directory and description. In the descriptions there are numbers enclosed in parentheses. What do these mean? I can't find an explanation anywhere... example (pg 101) Directory Description /dev/ Device nodes; see intro (4) Dave To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-newbies" in the body of the message
