I also tried doing it after the system was installed and running. it will make the motions for installation, but once done, running x config from sysinstall produces a "XF86 not installed!" error. Nothing concerned with xservers appears in the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 directory. Not much at all, actually. The snap from Sept 3rd does not have this problem. these are the only 3 I've tried. I'm using the releng22.freebsd.org server (which rocks, by the way. Installs over cable take me about an hour.) So, whatever you do, don't remove the sept 3 distribution!!
