My theory was correct.  I built phoenix on your system without Xft
support, and it works just fine.  If you want to see, do this:

> export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/home/marcus/phoenix/work/mozilla/dist/bin
> /home/marcus/phoenix/work/mozilla/dist/bin/phoenix

You should get it to launch.  Now, for Xft support, try cleaning out
your X11 fonts, and try the /usr/X11R6/bin version again.
