Because I maintain both the MIT Kerberos and Heimdal ports, I routinely have three sets of Kerberos libraries installed (base Heimdal in /usr/lib; ports Heimdal in /usr/local/lib; ports MIT Kerberos in /usr/local/krb5/lib). You have to be a little careful at compile time, but there are generally no problems with clashing. Most Kerberos 5 applications are compatible at the source code level with both MIT Kerberos and Heimdal. Occassionally some small tweaks are needed due to differences in the API (see e.g. /usr/ports/security/pam_krb5). The libraries that must be linked in are different, however.
