I remember that the author said he would maintain both versions (when he announced he was bringing out a GPL licensed version) and one person deliberately misunderstood. The reason, as I understood it, was because the person (I won't name) simply wanted to move userland software to ports, and saw this as an opportunity to further that goal. That was after I made it clear then that the author had stated the intention of maintaining both versions.
