Have you tried su -K? If it works, perhaps you can alias su to su -K.

Have you recompiled the compatibility database (as root)?
  
   /usr/bin/cap_mkdb /etc/login.conf

Are you sure that adam is correctly added to /etc/group (no spaces please).

  wheel:*:0:root,larry,curly,moe,adam
