Note: I now have access to both a pine64+ 2GB and
a rpi3 with no hardware in common (USB hub or SSD
or such). (The rpi3 has less RAM and so does not
need as big of a stress run.)

The behaviors happen in both contexts: it was not
some sort of pine64+ 2GB quirk (or the hub/SSD that
I typically use in that context).
