The cc that comes with FBSD 2.1 is gcc 2.6.something.  I asked about lint
in the comp.unix.bsd.freebsd.misc group and got pretty much the same 
response as you.  I asked about it because it was referenced in the 
Makefile for inn1.4, but apparently it's not necessary.
