Oh -- I guess you're right.  I was under the mistaken impression that
the threads stuff had been integrated into the mainstream "libc".  I see
now that it's a separate library.

So, once the call to _thread_init() is moved out of crt0.o and into a
constructor within the threads library itself, then libc won't be a
problem any more.
