[resolutely sticking to the command line even in 2010! :-)] You're not the only one :) Not to discourage any improvements in the base, but have you looked at ports/mail/heirloom-mailx (formerly known as Nail)? It's a descendant of /usr/bin/mail, but much more featureful :)
