Maybe make world parses those directories to move the files to their
destinations, and when they aren't there it dies.  Or maybe (since there
are docs in several places) i deleted a little bit too much (directories
*and* files) and that tripped make world.  Just a guess.

fdp?  You don't mean pdf do you?  So it starts in /usr/doc and ends up in
/usr/share/doc?
