That said, the ioctl() method is probably also portable across platforms. 
Recommending the deprecating quasi-standard interfaces in favor of local
interfaces for third-party application writers would probably be a
mistake.  Where it's not possible to perform the function with the
portable API, fine, of course.  :-)
