Adam,

If I could ask a couple of questions first, about your
performance issues:

1. What sort of hub/switch are you using?
2. What client are you using to perform the ftp?  (Win98,
NT, Linux...)
3. Have you tried setting a direct connection (full duplex)
between the client and freebsd server using a cross over
cable?

On occasion, I have seen the Intel driver incorrectly
negotiate the wrong duplex mode with certain hubs  (Yes, I
said hubs, not switches.*grin*) . I was only able to track
down the problem when creating a direct connection with a
cross over cable.

Often, the type of performance you are seeing also goes hand
in hand with corrupted files after the transfer.
