You might take a look at using ganglia to do this.  It uses multicast to
do distribution of a variety of statistics including load, memory usage,
and swap usage.  Installation is pretty easy (and even easier if you use
the port in PR ports/48551 :).  There are currently ruby and python
bindings to it.  There's also a pretty GUI (PR ports/48552).
