I seemed to be writing the config.ini with the memory parameters in the wrong place (under ~/.eclipse/...). Now both the permgen and the problematic frame problem seem to be solved, I'll report any other issue with this. Please include the patch in the port as soon as possible. For the unsuspecting user it can be very disappointing to see the ide crash when trying to open a file... One question: can I update eclipse with its own update facility (help->software update->find and install)?
