Fortunately there are freely available X servers to fit the bill.

	Not really.  I prefer to start with a tool that is a bit closer 
to what I want to end up with, that has all the basics I need, and 
has nothing I don't need.  Unix (especially BSD-based) fits that 
description admirably.
