c.f. one of the first episodes of ER in the current series. Armed perp
and security guard exchange fire in hospital corridor at around 15m
range, both emptying magazines. Only injury is to the guard when he
falls onto broken glass.

So they do get it right (kind of), sometimes.

Or Pulp Fiction, of course.
