Yes, my cheap OPti-931 card also still works even with the AD1848 INIT error at bootup. The problem turned out to be, that the pnp code is incorrectly assigning irq 5 to this soundcard, and was thus conflicting with my sio3. When I disabled sio3, the sound works just fine.
