I had the same problem, the solution I used to get it to work was to
change the following line in the sendmail.cf file
from:
#Dj$w.Foo.COM
to:
Dj$w.yourdomainname.com

since sendmail cannot find your DNS, you need to specify to sendmail the
domain name.  If you do not have a domain name, you may not be able to
sendmail to/from outside your network (that I know of).
