If your talking about the handbook, mine starts section 5.7 with: A ``desktop environment'' can mean anything ranging from a simple window manager to a complete suite of desktop applications, such as KDE or GNOME. Now it used to be (and maybe still is) that DE meant ONLY things like KDE/GNOME/CDE and never a WM (which was only part of a DE). So maybe the above quote is wrongly trying to re-define common jargon; I'm not sure. I think it's a better definition, because I'd be hard-pressed to give a good definition of "desktop environment" that wasn't as broad as possible, but then we accept lots of bad jargon. But if the sections's intro is OK, then it should be OK to add a subsection (5.7.5?) on window managers. It needs no more than a short sales pitch on the benefits of not using GNOME/KDE/CDE, a suggestion of a few of the most popular WMs (for no good reason), and some links to good external information. Separate detailed sections for each of the most popular WMs is probably OK, but I don't know where you draw the line, without knowing more about their popularity.
