I have been using FreeBSD 2.0R happily since it was first shipped (6 -7 months ?). I've had no problems until now. ****My problem: (IP packets simply are not being routed through my router to the inet, even though router has no problem communicating with inet or hosts) Routing from my net (199.199.28) through my router (199.199.28.1) suddenly screeched to a halt. By this, I mean that none of my hosts on the network can reach the inet execept for a Novell server that runs Mercury for Pegasus (smtp mail gateway). I currently have approximately 50 hosts that use WWW, ftp, telnet software all the time. I can still reach the net if accessing directly from the console of the router machine (jasper). The interesting aspect is that the smtp gateway on my novell server (topaz) is still able to send/receive e-mail with no problem. ****What i've already tried: - I have rebooted jasper (router) several times to reset the sockets. - From my hosts, I can ping as far as the modem (serial port) on the router (199.86.32.171) - no further. - verified all connections (cards, hubs, etc) - verified consistency of inability to ping anything on the net from several hosts. - used packet sniffer to verify that packets were arriving at router and found that they were. However, router was not returning any packets to sending host. ****Useful info: - Nothing has changed on the router in the last 3 months - The newest addition to the net that could be the cause of the problem (by some stupid chance) is an HP-Laserjet 4SI MX PS. And this printer does speak tcp/ip. - Second newest addition to the net is a Win95 host, but this has been up for almost a month now. ************************************************** System: (router) - FreeBSD 2.0R - 2gig drive - Connection=dialup slip over 28.8kbps modem - Other networks on ethernet = Novell 3.11 (100 user) - Class C network = 199.199.28 (no subnets) - No local nameserver, we use service providers nameserver *************************************************** (internet) service provider (Skypoint) ----------------------------------|----------------------------- modem (199.86.32.1) | | (my net) modem (199.86.32.171) -----------------------------------|----------------------------------------------------- jasper.ncbc.edu (199.199.28.1 -router) **************************************************** jasper(11): netstat -ain Name Mtu Network Address Ipkts Ierrs Opkts Oerrs Coll ed0 1500 <Link>00.00.c0.b3.86.b0 713 0 105 0 0 ed0 1500 199.199.28 199.199.28.1 713 0 105 0 0 lo0 65532 <Link> 20 0 20 0 0 lo0 65532 127 127.0.0.1 20 0 20 0 0 sl0 552 <Link> 4 1 33 0 0 sl0 552 199.86.32 199.86.32.171 4 1 33 0 0 sl1* 552 <Link> 0 0 0 0 0 jasper(12): netstat -rn Routing tables Internet: Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use Interface default 199.86.32.1 UGS 1 905 sl0 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UH 0 0 lo0 199.86.32.1 199.86.32.171 UH 1 0 sl0 199.86.32.171 127.0.0.1 UH 0 0 lo0 199.199.28 link#1 UC 0 0 ed0 199.199.28.1 0:0:c0:b3:86:b0 UHL 1 22 lo0 199.199.28.2 0:0:c0:9:a2:79 UHL 2 2066 ed0 199.199.28.100 0:0:c0:b:44:51 UHL 0 339 ed0 224 127.0.0.1 US 0 0 lo0 jasper(13): netstat -r Routing tables Internet: Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use Interface default skypoint-gw.skypoi UGS 1 905 sl0 localhost localhost UH 0 0 lo0 skypoint-gw.skyp jasper UH 1 0 sl0 jasper localhost UH 0 0 lo0 NCBC link#1 UC 0 0 ed0 jasper 0:0:c0:b3:86:b0 UHL 1 22 lo0 h002 0:0:c0:9:a2:79 UHL 2 2097 ed0 topaz 0:0:c0:b:44:51 UHL 0 339 ed0 BASE-ADDRESS.MCA localhost US 0 0 lo0 ********************************************** I've tried to include as much information as possible.
