Try:

ppp ON > term
ATDT0836061318

The term command connects your terminal to the modem, so what you 
type goes directly to the modem.  Just log onto your ISPs machine and 
when you're finished, type ``~p''.  When you get the ppp prompt back, 
type ``add default HISADDR'' and you're done.

This can all be automated after you've got FreeBSD installed - *THEN* 
you can use things like ``dial''.
